Community Crime Mapping System

User's Guide

The Community Crime Mapping System has been designed to be an easy and efficient way for citizens to find out about crimes occurring in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police jurisdiction.   This User's Guide is a handy reference for new users of the system, and we highly recommend printing this guide and using it to assist you while you are becoming accustomed to the interface.

Map Functions (Left Menu Items)
The menu items along the left side of the screen are functions that a user can perform on the map. Follow these simple instructions to perform these map functions:

Zoom In:
To zoom in to an area of the map, first select the “Zoom In” menu option then click and drag a box around the area of the map where you wish to zoom.  The area that is highlighted as you click and drag your mouse will become the new map area.  (Please note that this application will not zoom in closer than approximately 0.5 square miles to help protect the identity of victims. This control is put in place specifically to facilitate the protection of a victim’s identity for very serious, sensitive crimes such as rapes and other sex offenses.)

Zoom Out:
To zoom out, first select the “Zoom Out” menu option then click and drag a box around the area of the map from which you wish to zoom out.  The map will be re-centered around the area that is highlighted as you click and drag your mouse.

Zoom Full:
Selecting this menu option will automatically take you to the full county view of the map.

Zoom Previous:
Selecting this menu option will automatically display the previous map viewed by the user. Use this option to go back to where you were before you zoomed or panned the map.

Pan:
The Pan menu option allows you to move the map in any direction.  To pan, select the “Pan” menu option then click and drag the map in any direction.

Identify:
The Identify menu option is designed to help you find out more about an item on the map.  When you select this option, you will be prompted in the left menu area of the screen to select a “Layer:” to identify (i.e. Reported Incidents, Calls for Service, Patrol Divisions). Simply select the layer of interest then click on the map item you want to identify.   Information about the selected item(s) will appear in a table in the “Results” area below the map. (Note: Selecting “Patrol Divisions” gives you a quick and easy way to find out within what CMPD Patrol Division a particular location falls.)

Select:
The Select menu option allows the user to generate a summary and listing of Reported Incidents or Calls for Service in an area (1,000 feet or 0.5 miles) around a location on the map.  To use this menu option, perform the following steps:

1. Click on the “Select” menu option. You will then be prompted in the left menu area to select a “Radius:” and “Layer:”.
2. Select a distance (1,000 feet or 0.5 miles) in the “Radius:” dropdown list.
3. Select a layer (Reported Incidents or Calls for Service) in the “Layer:” drop-down list.
4. Single-click on the map where you want the center of your radius to be located. The geographic area that you have selected will be highlighted on the map. Information about the selected items for the designated layer (selected in step 3) will appear in a table in the “Results” area below the map.

You can click on the “Clear Selection” option in the left menu area just below the Layers dropdown list to clear the results and the highlighted area on the map.

Filter and Display Functions (Right Menu Area)
The menu area along the right side of the screen offers the ability to filter data for a particular time frame, control what is displayed on the map, and locate an address, intersection, or street on the map. Follow these simple instructions to utilize these options:

Filter Date:
Click on the “Filter Date” title to display or hide this section. The Filter Date section allows you to specify the date range for the data that you are interested in displaying on the map. The “Data Available for Filter” note lets you know what date range is available for display with regards to both Calls for Service and Reported Incidents. These data sources are updated in monthly increments upon the release of the CMPD’s official “Monthly Summary Report” that is based on information supplied by the CMPD to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program. You can manually enter a date, or you can click on the “Date from:” and “Date to:” links to select a date from a small, pop-up calendar. After entering your date range, click on the “Apply Filter” button to update the map. (Note: The Filter Date section always defaults to the latest month’s worth of data available through the mapping system.)

Layers:
Click on the “Layer” title to display or hide this section. The Layers section allows you to control what layers are displayed on the map by clicking on the checkbox beside each layer. It is important to note that each layer has a display scale that controls when a layer can be viewed on the map; this display scale is dependent on how far you are zoomed in or zoomed out on the map. Controlling when something is viewable assists users with displaying data sources when they are most useful. For example, it would not be very useful to display all streets when zoomed out to the entire county because the map would be too cluttered; therefore, all streets do not appear until you zoom further into the map.

Each layer and its corresponding checkbox may at times appear gray in color (inactive). This indicates that you are not zoomed in close enough on the map for displaying that particular layer. As you zoom in closer on the map, layers will become active as needed, and you will be able to click on the checkbox to choose whether or not you want a layer to be displayed.

Legend:
Click on the “Legend” title to display or hide this section. The Legend section provides you with your typical map legend that indicates what each map symbol represents. For example, green dots represent Calls for Service, and blue dots represent Reported Incidents.

Locate:
Click on the “Locate” title to display or hide this section. The Locate section allows you to search for an address/intersection or a street. These options allow the user to quickly zoom in to a particular location in the county, and this is the quickest way to zoom in to a specific location on the map.  To perform a search, simply select “Address/Intersection” or “Street” from the dropdown list, enter the requested information, and then click the "Search" button.  Please note that when entering an intersection, enter the first street in the “Address:” data entry box and enter the intersecting street in the “Cross Street:” data entry box.

Using the Locate section to search for an address/intersection or street will many times return a list of multiple locations from which to choose. Click on the “View” link to the left of any listed location to view that particular location on the map.
