User's Guide
The Traffic Accident & Roadway Obstruction Mapping System has been designed to be an easy and efficient way for citizens to find out about traffic problems within the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police jurisdiction.   This User's Guide is a handy reference for new users of the system, and we highly recommend printing this guide and using it to assist you while you are becoming accustomed to the interface.

Map Functions (Left Menu Items)
The menu items along the left side of the screen are functions that a user can perform on the map. Follow these simple instructions to perform these map functions:

Zoom In:
To zoom in to an area of the map, first select the “Zoom In” menu option then click and drag a box around the area of the map where you wish to zoom.  The area that is highlighted as you click and drag your mouse will become the new map area.  (Please note that this application will not zoom in closer than approximately 0.5 square miles to help protect the identity of victims. This control is put in place specifically to facilitate the protection of a victim’s identity for very serious, sensitive crimes such as rapes and other sex offenses.)

Zoom Out:
To zoom out, first select the “Zoom Out” menu option then click and drag a box around the area of the map from which you wish to zoom out.  The map will be re-centered around the area that is highlighted as you click and drag your mouse.

Zoom Full:
Selecting this menu option will automatically take you to the full county view of the map.

Zoom Previous:
Selecting this menu option will automatically display the previous map viewed by the user. Use this option to go back to where you were before you zoomed or panned the map.

Pan:
The Pan menu option allows you to move the map in any direction.  To pan, select the “Pan” menu option then click and drag the map in any direction.

Display Functions (Right Menu Area)
The menu area along the right side of the screen offers the ability to locate an address, intersection, or street on the map. Follow these simple instructions to utilize these options:

Legend:
Click on the “Legend” title to display or hide this section. The Legend section provides you with your typical map legend that indicates what each map symbol represents. For example, squares represent Accidents and circles represent roadway obstructions.

Locate:
Click on the “Locate” title to display or hide this section. The Locate section allows you to search for an address/intersection or a street. These options allow the user to quickly zoom in to a particular location in the county, and this is the quickest way to zoom in to a specific location on the map.  To perform a search, simply select “Address/Intersection” or “Street” from the dropdown list, enter the requested information, and then click the "Search" button.  Please note that when entering an intersection, enter the first street in the “Address:” data entry box and enter the intersecting street in the “Cross Street:” data entry box.

Using the Locate section to search for an address/intersection or street will many times return a list of multiple locations from which to choose. Click on the “View” link to the left of any listed location to view that particular location on the map.
